Cascadia

Little is known about the true nature of Cascadia despite the rampant rumors. It first came to the attention of the east when strange rumors began arriving from traders. The new United States dispatched a team to discover the truth behind the rumors. Contact was lost with them. In June 1874, a single envoy arrived claiming to be from a new nation that had business with the President. He delivers to Grant a declaration from Thomas Edison that he has established the nation of Cascadia in the Pacific Northwest that is autonomous from the rest of the country. He tells him that this announcement is arriving at the same moment to officials around the world alerting them to his existence as well. He threatens that if any attempt is made to take the new nation by force, they would be met with grave consequences with technology that the world has never seen. The borders were entirely closed and no people were allowed in or out. Very little contact is made between Cascadia and the rest of the nation. What little interaction there is occurs at special waypoints along the border. No one has returned with any idea as to the state of nation but what little technology has been seen proves that Edison is working with technology far beyond average capabilities.
