On May 24th, 1863 Lincoln takes an afternoon walk with a small retinue into downtown Washington D.C. During the walk a carriage horse bolted and crushed Lincoln beneath the cart. He was mortally wounded and died three days later in the White House. The news spreads throughout the Union and morale takes a drastic hit. Hannibal Hamlin assumes the Presidency with Schuyler Colfax as his VP. Still demoralized after his death, the forces at Gettysburg underperform and are routed by General Lee.
